Dilworth is a wholesale specialty coffee roaster, and a one stop shop for cafes and coffee shops. We have spent decades designing, adjusting, and perfecting our recipes, roasts and blends for every coffee occasion; and none more than our bulk espresso options.
A shot of espresso is a blank canvas for creativity and innovation. Hundreds of different coffee-based beverages start with a well-pulled shot of espresso. We’ve designed a few espresso blends specifically for their different potential uses in coffee shops and cafes.
In designing them, we’ve tasted and compared their usage in a plethora of café drinks to test their effectiveness and pleasurability. Not every drink recipe requires a bright espresso full of florals and citrus, and not every beverage wants to be rich with dark cocoa and earth notes. We design our coffees to help you reach your goals, and we think they taste pretty good too!
Choosing Between Medium and Dark Roast Espresso
When picking a bulk espresso roast for your coffee shop, consider the flavor profile you want to showcase in your drinks. Medium and dark roasts are the go-to choices for espresso, each with unique qualities that suit various tastes and drink styles.
Medium roast strikes a perfect balance, preserving many of the coffee's natural flavors while providing enough body and sweetness for a smooth, enjoyable shot. These roasts typically bring out chocolate, caramel, and nutty flavors with a gentle acidity that adds depth to the espresso. Medium roasts are ideal for straight espresso shots and pair well with milk in lattes and cappuccinos without overpowering the drink.
Indulge in the robust, dark roast espresso that offers deep, rich flavors with clear hints of dark chocolate, toasted nuts, and caramelized sugar. Dark roasts, with their lower acidity and fuller body, result in a rich, creamy shot that pairs beautifully with milk, syrups, and other flavors. Coffee shops focusing on flavored drinks and rich espresso-based beverages usually go for dark roasts because they bring out the sweetness and dessert-like qualities, offering that classically indulgent experience.
Why Isn't Light Roast Espresso More Popular?
Light roast coffee retains its natural acidity and bright, fruity flavors, occasionally leading to an espresso shot that feels slightly off balance. The way espresso is brewed under high pressure brings out its acidity. If the beans are lightly roasted, they might taste sharp, sour, or just too bright, especially since they miss out on the caramelization and body that darker roasts have. Also, light roasts don't have much soluble oil, making getting that nice, rich crema you expect from a good shot challenging.
Finding Blends that Hit the Spot
Dilworth Espresso (Medium/Dark)
Our flagship espresso blend—This blend is bold, sweet, and complex. It’s a blend of Brazilian, Indonesian, and Papua New Guinean origins. Dilworth Espresso is designed to be a go-to, tried and true, day in and day out blend. It’s strong enough to stand up to steamed milk and vanilla syrup, but also nuanced and sweet enough to be savored on its own.
Dilworth Espresso Decaf (Medium/Dark)
Dilworth Espresso Decaf has all the same beans as the standard blend, except they’ve been through an MC decaffeination process.
Midnight Lotus (Medium)
Midnight Lotus is our most nuanced bulk espresso blend. It’s designed to be a 2-sip, drunk immediately, pure espresso shot. An espresso full of chocolate and dried fruit, very delicious on its own, but some of the nuance is lost when paired with too much milk and sugar. Midnight Lotus is a very similar blend when compared to Dilworth Espresso, but the ratios have been adjusted to highlight the chocolate and fruit notes.
For a fun use of this blend, add a double shot to a 16oz cup of soda water to make a refreshing coffee soda.
Seda Dulce (Medium)
Seda Dulce is a bulk espresso blend we’ve developed to be quite sweet and mild. It’s nutty, buttery, and has some distinct caramel notes. It’s similar in function to Midnight Lotus in that it’s wonderful on its own but can also stand out in lattes with minimal sugar. The caramel and butter notes pair beautifully with steamed milk. The difference is there’s almost no fruit in this blend of South American coffees. Just as delicious, but a different tasting profile.
Milano (Dark)
Our Milano Espresso Blend is blended with South American and Indonesian coffees to be used by coffee shops who love to serve fun and creative drinks. Drinks full of fun-colored syrups and crunchy garnishes. Milano is rich in gourmet dark chocolate and stands up to all the fun syrups and steamed milk that your customers love. Dilworth’s goal is to help you achieve your coffee goals; Milano may be the exact blend you need for your shop.
Organic San Remo (Dark)
This is probably our highest selling bulk espresso blend. Not only is this blend organic, but it has a beautiful smooth almost creamy mouth feel. Our Organic San Remo has profound dark chocolate and caramel notes, almost no acidity, and to some a deep cooked blackberry sweetness. This blend can do it all. It mixes seamlessly with milk, but also nuanced enough to be savored on its own.
