We have been making pumpkin pies since the 17th century. The humble gourd is native to Central America and was popularized by French cookbooks and the association with Thanksgiving.
Although Starbucks is the first name we associate with pumpkin spice, there is indeed a much older, rich heritage with coffee and spice. As early as the 15th century, coffee traders from Yemen and Mokha shipped coffee by sea along with all the popular spices we would later see populating our modern pumpkin spice seasonings. These now classic autumnal spices are cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, mace, clove and sometimes allspice.
